The Lower House in the Netherlands Parliament, last week, showed its support to the Donner proposal, paving the way for a two-year trial period license for online casinos gaming. The trial license will be issued to state-owned Holland Casino. This will ensure that it will be the only online casino gambling venue recognized and permitted by the Dutch government. Holland Casino is the sole permitted gambling medium for the nation and is state-controlled and operated. It has been at the center of disputes with online casinos gambling groups domiciled in other EU countries. These countries argue that it is a monopoly, excluding them from the EU privilege of free trade over the borders of member countries. The Dutch government does not accept the argument, and Donner has stated in the past that sovereign restrictions are essential in preventing online casinos and land-based gambling addiction in his country. Local experts estimate that around 300,000 people gamble at online casinos 'illegally' in the Netherlands. This has drawn the conclusion that the country would like to attract these online casinos gamblers exclusively to a state-controlled site like Holland Casino. According to the Minister, if the number of online gamblers in the nation has increased significantly by the end of the trial period, he would regard the trial as unsuccessful. There will be no set gambling limits, except for those pertaining to age, between the ages of 18 and 23. This age group will be limited to 100 Euro bets per week. |
