Online Gambling Now a Felony in Washington State 12 Jun 2006 Since Wednesday, online gambling has become an even riskier business in Washington State than it ever was. The lawmakers have decided that gambling online can now can be considered a felony and has adjusted laws accordingly. The police have said that while this law is now officially a felony, they doubt they will be able to track down the individual gambling offenders. Lawmakers have said that the reason for upping the severity of the gambling 'crime' is to eliminate the risks of minors getting involved in the industry, or organized crime units taking over online gambling operations. There are thousands of online gambling sites and millions of people playing online at any given time. Gambling in Washington is regulated, but the online casino sector is harder to control. The police are aware that it is very easy for the organized crime elements to take over the websites and use the industry for other purposes, such as money laundering. Online gambling operators say that the laws discriminate against them, while letting state lottery operators, tribal and land casinos benefit. It is not believed that many individuals will quit online gambling, in the near future. They are fully aware that the law authorities have a hard time tracking down the individual players and they will take full advantage of this fact. |
